Geography A2 Level (EDEXCEL) at Ryburn Valley High School
This is an issue based syllabus with a strong emphasis upon problem solving and decision making. It offers the opportunity to study global processes and events, impacts we have on them, and the influence they have on man. During the lower sixth students follow a 3 unit course that can be awarded as 2 discrete AS level qualifications or it may be the first half of a full A level qualification.The 3 units in the first year of study are :Changing Landforms and their management (rivers and coasts)Managing changing in human environments (rural and urban area studies)Environmental InvestigationThe first two units are examined, whilst the Environmental Investigation is a piece of fieldwork which is undertaken in a small group and written up individually.The 3 units in the second year of study are :Global Challenge – (issues in global sustainability)Researching Global Futures (natural and human global environmental issues)Synoptic unit (enquiry-based work; conservation versus exploitation and sustainability versus growth.)Teaching is approached in a wide variety of ways with the theory and case studies taught through seminars, role plays, videos, fieldwork, tutorials and class discussions.A compulsory Residential field week takes place in the Autumn of Y12. The cost is shared between school and students. However, as all students are expected to attend we try to make payment schemes as flexible as possible.
You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as Travel and Tourism or Health and Social Care, to prepare for higher education in areas of geography, humanities, science or more general higher education courses.With further training, you could go on to a job related to geography and work as a Town Planner, Environmental Officer or Weather Forecaster.The course also helps you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
