Drama and Theatre Studies A level at King Edward VI Sixth Form College
Drama and Theatre Studies is a creative, active and demanding course – intellectually, physically and emotionally. There is a strong emphasis on students working together to achieve success.
The course aims to develop your practical theatre skills and your theoretical understanding of drama and theatre. You will also learn to analyse and interpret a range of challenging texts. Naturally, those who study Drama develop their interpersonal skills and learn to work as part of an ensemble.
In Year 12, you will be examined on your interpretation of a set play from a performance perspective, and on your evaluation of a piece of live theatre. You will also collaborate on a performance of an extract from a published play, and explore the work of a theatre practitioner. In Year 13, you will study two set plays and devise your own piece of theatre. In all practical modules you can opt to be examined as an actor, director or designer.
Students studying this course should expect to visit the theatre regularly and support the College theatre production programme.
A GCSE in Drama is not required, but we would expect students to have some stage experience. A passion for reading and watching plays is essential.
