Art & Design UAL / Diploma Level 1 at Bolton College

Our art department is fully equipped with state-of-the-art materials.
Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.
What you'll learn
This course is designed for you to learn by direct experience, so most of the work is practical, enabling you to develop a range of skills across different art, design workshops.

You will undertake several projects and learn to work creatively to a client’s brief.
We encourage our Art, Design and Digital Media students to continue their English & maths study to Level 3.
Elements of study
Your programme consists of the following elements:
- Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
- English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
- Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)
- Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
- Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)
You don’t need any formal qualifications, but a passion for all aspects of art, design and media is a must. We will ask to see a portfolio of your art/design work and invite you to an informal interview.
Throughout the one-year course your work will be internally assessed. You will be given feedback on a regular basis and will be set smart targets to stretch and challenge you.
After Easter, you will focus on your final major project. You will be given a theme and you will produce a portfolio of work, which will be exhibited.
Government-funded Further Education courses are usually free if you are aged 16-18 and are a British or European Union resident. Financial help is available for some students, whose families are on low income. After you have completed the course you could remain in College and progress on to the Art & Design Diploma Level 2 or an alternative provision.

Following a career path in the art, design and digital media industry, you could choose to work as:
An Artist can earn up to £28,000 a year, depending on experience.
Professional Photographers can earn on £30,000 on average.
A Jewellery Designer, earning up between £15,000 and £50,000 a year depending on experience

Ofsted Grade 2 ‘Good’
Ofsted also agrees; in February we were inspected and graded 2 for ‘Good’. Ofsted highlighted the fact that our learners develop good employability and personal skills and that a high proportion progress to Apprenticeships, employment or Higher Education.
