Course description

 

OCR’s A Level in Biology (Specification A) aims to encourage learners to develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other. Furthermore you will develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods, as well as develop competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving skills. You will understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.

How is the course structured?

The AS is a one year course consisting of four modules.

The full A level is a two year course gained by completing six modules combined with the practical endorsement.

This module covers exchange and transport

Module 4

This module covers biodiversity, evolution and disease

 

Module 5

This module covers communication, homeostasis and energy

Module 6

This module covers genetics, evolution and ecosystems

 

Practical endorsement

A minimum of 12 practical activities are covered to demonstrate competence in a common core list of apparatus and technique usage. Performance reported separately to A-level grade as either a pass or fail.

 

 

 

Entry requirements

 

Triple Science at GCSE is strongly preferred with a minimum of a B grade achieved in all GCSE Biology units required. Students without Separate Science must have A grades in both Core and Additional Biology units. A minimum of a B grade in Maths GCSE and a C grade in English GCSE is also expected.
