Horticulture - Level 3 at Askham Bryan College

Course description

This study programme offers an exciting combination of practical and theory work, which will provide you with the skills to enter into the industry.  The programme involves planning and growing crops to harvest, growing plants to sell, landscape design, hard landscaping, sports turf and plant science.

 

 

Course content

Horticulture

• Plant and soil science • Plant identification and propagation • Amenity turf • Machinery maintenance • Estate skills • Site surveys and garden design • Construction of timber features and horizontal surfaces • English and maths provision where applicable

 

 

 

 

Entry requirements

Level 3 Study Programmes:

4 GCSEs at grade 4 (old GCSE grade C) or above to include 2 from English, Maths and Science with at least a grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English, Maths and Science at Level 2.

Future opportunities

Further study:

Higher education qualifications such as Foundation Degrees in Horticulture, Landscape and Garden Management, Sports Surface Management or Arboriculture, and, if you’re successful, then on to a ‘top up’ BSc Hons Degree in Applied Horticulture.

Careers:

Entry/lower level management position in gardens, open spaces, production and sports surface management positions.
