English Language AS/A Level at Okehampton College

Course description

You will learn about all aspects of the English Language; how we express ourselves through speech and writing, while exploring particular contexts or functions of language. As well as learning how to analyse, you will also be taught how to develop your own use of language.

Course content

Areas to be covered in Year 12

Also offered as an AS with two exams at the end of Year 12.

Topics studied in depth will include: understanding language features in context; topical language issues such as language and technology; language and its relationship to power; how language influences gender and how to critically engage with contentious issues regarding language use.

A wide variety of both spoken and written language will be studied covering a wide variety of purposes, audiences and genre.

Areas to be covered in Year 13

Two exams at the end of Year 13 – 80% plus a Coursework Element – 20%

Building on the previous year’s study, students will continue to analyse texts in even greater detail and extend their knowledge of topical language issues, including individual social varieties of English and British regional dialects.

In addition, they will learn about how language has changed and is changing; how humans acquire language (spoken) and how language is used in the Media.

The coursework element consists of an investigation into an area of language of interest to the student, culminating in an academic report and poster.


Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 A*s - C GCSEs with specifically at least grade B in English Language

English Language provides useful skills for a wide range of Higher Education courses, and is well suited to those considering journalism, law, media, teaching, forensics, the armed forces or any career involving speech or writing!
