Art and Design Level 3 Extended Diploma at Southport College

Course description

The course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding in specialist areas of art and desgin, and demonstrate the skills needed to participate in art and design environments and practice.
This is a dynamic and challenging course that will help you become a versatile, well rounded creative art student, who is prepared for University and your chosen future career. You'll get involved in a wide range of projects and attend lots of creative workshops, designed to help you develop your talent and your imagination in lots of different areas.
The Art Department has fantastic facilities including a Print Workshop, sewing machines, heat presses, Mac Suites and a Photography Studio. You'll have the opportunity to go on art-based trips to places such as London, Berlin, Paris and Calcutta, India.

Course content

You will study a series of subjects including:
• Painting
• Drawing
• Fine art
• 3-Dimensional design (wood, metal and plastics)
• Fashion/textiles
• Surface pattern
• Interior design
• Graphic design/illustration
• Animation
• Advertising
• Printmaking
• Photography
• Digital Media
• Contextual studies

Throughout the course, you will develop your skills in the use of software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

During the second year you will specialise in one of the following areas:
• Graphic design/illustration
• 3-Dimensional design/Fine Art
• Fashion and textiles

Entry requirements

• Minimum 5 GCSEs at A*- C including English or Merit in a related Level 2 Diploma and C or above in English
• Good portfolio that demonstrates strong observational drawing skills, mixed media and an innovative use of colour.
• Successful interview
• Satisfactory reference

Assessment

You will be continuously assessed throughout the course.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course, you may progress to a degree in a creative subject such as; Fine Art,Textiles, Fashion, 3D Design, Illustration, Graphics, Styling & Photography.
You may also wish to progress onto L4 Foundation Art & Design or a HND here at Southport College.
