Course description

This is a one year course that is designed as an extended introductory qualification to the Animal Management sector.  Work is completed on our recently built farm containing a range of sheep, goats, pigs, poultry and reptiles giving students access to wide selection of animals to improve their husbandry skills.

Course content

Students will study a range of units that focus on the key areas of looking after animals such as feedings and cleaning, animal biology, animal behaviour and handling as well as a conservation unit that looks at habitat management – an increasingly important aspect of animal management employment.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to study BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care should have previously achieved a pass at Level 2 Applied Science and should be able to demonstrate a desire to study in this sector.

Students will complete assessment in a variety of ways, including written assessments, presentations and practical observations. Students will complete a significant amount of practical work on the farm, working with our flock of sheep, our goats and our rare breed pigs that are farmed for breeding and/or meat production. Students will be assessed on their practical skills as they complete the day-to-day running of the farm that will include feeding, cleaning, assisting with visits from the vet, assisting with lambing and the transport of animals from farm to farm or slaughterhouse.

Future opportunities

This course is ideal for any student looking to pursue further study as a veterinary nurse, work in zoos or within the farming sector.

Animal Care provides an opportunity to study livestock animals up close, to learn how to look after them and provide for their needs, including developing breeding programs and selecting individuals for meat-rearing purposes. Working on our farm develops skills such as team working, enquiry, self management and being reflective – skills that are desirable to any future employer.
