Motor Vehicle Studies ABC Diploma at Solihull College & University Centre

Course description

If you aspire to work as a technician in the Motor Vehicle repair industry, fixing and servicing a variety of vehicles, this Level 1 course is designed to introduce you at the ground level about the various components and systems familiar in the mechanic sector and how to identify problems and repair them.

Course content

How car stuff works including the following topics;

- Health & Safety for car mechanics,
- Chassis Components,
- Engines and Components,
- Transmissions / Clutch and Gearbox,
- Vehicle Electrics,
- Vehicle Braking systems,
- Vehicle Exhaust, wheels and tyres.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade E/2 or above to include Maths and English, a suitable reference and a successful interview.


To pass this course your assessment is via practical assignments and a completed course work portfolio. There are no external exams

Future opportunities

If you are successful on this course you will be able to continue studying towards Level 2 in Motor Vehicle Studies.

You will be required to purchase:-

- Safety footwear and overalls are a MUST for workshop activities,
- Pens and Note Pads,
- Educational trips to motor vehicle related companies; factories.

Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.

If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.

    • Woodlands Campus

      An £8.5 million expansion of our Woodlands Campus now incorporates a new state of the art specialist centre for multi-craft, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, carpentry and an expanded motor vehicle training facility. A new sports pitch also enhances the existing sports facilities.

      The new Engineering and Construction facility houses twelve new workshops; six for construction and six for motor vehicle. The rooms accommodate an MOT/motor sport workshop; an engine workshop and further rooms for decorating, plastering and brickwork.

      Woodlands has purpose-built engineering workshops as well as commercial-standard hair and beauty salons. Our IT facilities, learning resource centres and library are also first-rate.

      We also offer a selection of higher education courses at our Woodlands Campus so you can continue your studies with us.

      Via Bus or Train

      The main bus terminal in north Solihull is located in Chelmsley Wood centre. The number 94, 676, 694, 71, 966 and 966A stop at the main terminal with the number 94 stopping on Auckland Drive. The nearest train stations are Marston Green or Water Orton station both located approximately 20 minutes away.
