Health & Social Care Level 3 90 Credit Diploma at East Surrey College

Course description

This is a practical, work-related course. You will learn by completing projects and coursework based on realistic workplace situations, activities, and demands. As well as learning about employment in the care sector, you will develop the knowledge and skills needed for starting a valuable career in this area. You will need to develop good study skills including the ability to research independently and meet deadlines. You will be required to source a variety of work placements.

Course content

Mandatory and vocational units are subject to change, but will include approximately nine subjects over the year, for example:
 
• Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
• Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
• Health, Safety & Security in Health & Social Care
• Development Through the Life Stages
• Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
• Safeguarding Adults and Promoting Independence
• Vocational Experience for Health & Social Care
 
In the second year (Extended Diploma):
 
• Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care
• Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care
• Working with Medication in Health & Social Care
• Complementary Therapies for Health & Social Care
• Infection Control and Prevention
• Nutrition for Health & Social Care

 

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade A*- C, which must include both English and Maths. Must have vocational work experience and clean DBS.

Assessment

Coursework, observed discussions, role plays, presentations and work placements throughout the course.

Financial information

If you are under 19 on 31/08/2016, tuition is free. If you are 19 or over please consult Client Services for advice and guidance on funding and eligibility.
Please be aware that there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.
 

Future opportunities

• Employment in the health sector, including care homes and day centres working with a variety of people with care and support needs
 
• Extended Diploma (subject to positive reference from tutor, including good attendance and punctuality and attitude to learning)
 
• University entrance following completion of the Extended Diploma in subjects such as nursing, social work, radiography, paramedic sciences and counselling

Equipment needed:
 
• Text books
• DBS check processed by ESC, Student to cover costs
• Stationery: USB, ring binder, dividers, pens, paper, plastic wallets etc.
• Uniform: college polo shirt, fleece (optional). You will also be expected to wear appropriate trousers/skirt and shoes to college and to placement
• Access to IT an advantage
