Aeronautical Engineering Level 3 Extended Diploma at East Surrey College

Course description

This qualification is designed to meet the needs of those preparing to pursue a career within the aviation industry with an option of choosing mechanical engineering at later stages. It offers routes into further study (higher education) and a range of employment opportunities at engineering technician level. The programme focuses on key aero/mechanical principles involved in these industries giving the candidate a broad base from which to further their career.

Course content

Units/topics covered:
 
The course consists of 180 credits. Each unit is typically worth 10 credits and the programme may vary slightly depending on awarding body guidelines and specifications. A typical programme is listed below.

- Mathematics for Technicians
-Theory of Flight
- Principles and Applications of Aircraft Mechanical Science
- Engineering Project (This is a 20 Credit unit taken in the second year)
- Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
- Electrical & Electronic Principles
- Mechanical Principles and Applications
 
The Additional 10 Units may include:
 
- Further Mathematics for Technicians
- Aircraft Propulsion Systems
- Application of Mechanical Systems in Engineering
- Aircraft Hydraulic Systems - Engineering Design

-Communication for Engineering Technicians

- Principles and Applications of Aircraft Physical Science

- Human Factors in Aircraft Engineering

Entry requirements

Students must have at least five GCSEs at Grade C or above (including Maths, Science and English) with a satisfactory interview. A technical background would be useful but not essential. Suitable prior knowledge and skills will be taken into account at interview.

Assessment

The course will be internally assessed through a programme of assignments, projects, case studies and practical activities

Financial information

If you are under 19 on 31/08/2016, tuition is free. If you are 19 or over please consult Client Services for advice and guidance on funding and eligibility. Please be aware that there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.
 

Future opportunities

A successful student with a Merit grade or above in at least five subjects may have the opportunity to study a higher engineering course at this college or at university (see individual course entries for desired universities). This may be a degree or HND programme
