Performing Arts BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Rainford High Technology College

Course description

The course is very practical and will be largely based around all aspects of preparation for performance. There is the flexibility to focus on one or more areas from musical theatre, dance and acting and you will be able to develop your skills and techniques. You will also have the opportunity to extend your understanding of current arts practitioners through research.

Course content

Every session will involve some practical work building on skills and technique in your chosen art form. You will also be devising and rehearsing for a variety of performances and audiences throughout the course both on your own and with others within the group. You will be completing logs and journals describing your practical work and completing a research project on artists within your chosen field.

Entry requirements

Ideally you will have a GCSE in Drama, Music or Dance, but experience in extracurricular performances or external theatre, dance or music schools is equally valuable. It is crucial that you have a love of performance and you are willing to put in extra rehearsal time both during and after your day of lessons.

Assessment

You will be assessed by eight units over the two year course, six are mandatory:

  1. Investigating practitioner’s work – research project
  2. Developing skills and techniques for live performance – presentation, performance and log
  3. Group performance workshop
  4. Performing within the community
  5. Individual performance commission
  6. Final live performance to an audience

 

Two are optional from a wide range of topics such as:

– Street dance technique

– Acting styles

– Improvisation

– Musical theatre techniques

– Variety performance

Future opportunities

This BTEC is the equivalent of two A-levels and will be run by the nationally acclaimed MD Productions. It is suitable for students who have a strong interest in forging a career in the performing arts industry as it will give you the opportunity to work directly with professionals both inside and outside Sixth Form and provide invaluable experience and contacts for careers in musical theatre, dance and acting. A qualification in Performing Arts also develops all round performance skills and transferable skills such as self-confidence, self-presentation, personal discipline, time management and organisation, which are highly regarded by universities and employers and as such can also lead to careers in the media, hospitality and leisure industries.
