Sport & Exercise Sciences BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Landau Forte Sixth Form College

Course description

The annual contribution of the sport sector to the UK economy is over £8 billion with a workforce comprising of more the 600,000 people. Sport and exercise scientists continue to be a growing presence in the world of sport, and as we look to the future, all the signs suggest that their influence in sport will increase. From the elite performers’ reliance on a large support team, to the casual gym user’s use of ergogenic aids, sport and exercise sciences’ core elements of anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics are seen in almost every aspect of sport from grass roots to elite.

This course focuses on the application of scientific principles to sports performance and coaching. You will have the opportunity to complete individual, group and project type experiments in sports science. This course is suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in the field of sport, sport science, sports coaching or professional sports.

We are offering the Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Exercise sciences which is a two year course and worth the equivalent to 2 A levels upon successful completion. Due to the way the course is structured and delivered, students will achieve Subsidiary Diploma at the end of the first year, which is worth one full A level.

If students only wish to take Sport and Exercise Science in one pool, we are also offering the Level 3 certificate. This is a one year course and is worth the equivalent to one AS level upon successful competition. If desired, there will be an option to continue this in the second year of study to extend the certificate to a Subsidiary Diploma which is worth one full A level.

The Subsidiary Diploma will count as two choices from the option pool and the Certificate will count as one choice from the option pool.

Entry requirements

BTEC Science Merit – Distinction or C grade in GCSE English and Science.

Future opportunities

This course provides an alternative route to the 2 AS/A2 qualifications for those who wish to pursue a career in the field of sport, leisure or recreation. BTEC Sport ad Exercise Sciences would suit students who have a keen interest in the theory surrounding sport but do not compete or participate regularly at a high standard. The course is also ideal for students who find assessment through formal exams difficult. You can go on to higher education to study a degree in sports studies/science, sports therapy, sports coaching, leisure studies or PE teaching. Those who wish to pursue careers in professional sport would also find the course highly useful.
