Drama and Theatre Studies A-Level at Dallam School

Course description

Aim of the course

  • Challenge students to achieve their full potential as lifelong learners in the Arts by broadening their horizons and opening up a world of creative opportunities.
  • Extend your knowledge of Theatre, Practitioners, and technical elements.
  • Develop your skills of performance and analysis in your written communication, thereby ensuring you achieve your potential and achieve the best A Level grade you can.

Course content

The AS Drama and Theatre Studies course consists of:

  • Autumn Term: Introduction to Theatre Studies and performance review. A practical study of ‘A Dolls House’ by Ibsen
  • Spring Term: Group performance project based on a set text
  • Summer Term: Exam skills for set texts and written examination

The A2 Drama and Theatre Studies course consists of:

  • Autumn Term: Taster workshops in specific theatrical styles and research into appropriate content, leading to a group devised theatre project
  • Spring Term: Practical study of set text ‘Servant of Two Masters’ by Goldoni and ‘A View from the Bridge’ by Arthur Miller
  • Summer Term: Exam skills for set texts and written examination

Entry requirements

You should have achieved an A*-C grade in at least five subjects at GCSE level. An enthusiasm for theatre and performance.


Successful candidates will be awarded an AS grade A - E and this counts as 50% of a full A level and they may then choose to go on to follow the A2 course, which leads to a full A level in Drama and Theatre Studies.

Future opportunities

The AS/A2 level qualification is accepted as a strong qualification for university courses in all subjects. A Theatre degree can lead onto all sorts of careers from Performing Arts, Law, Journalism, the Media and Advertising, Research, Marketing, Production Designer, Drama Therapy, Broadcasting, the Police Force, Management, the Civil Service, Business, Teaching. Our past students are all making successful careers in many of these areas.
