Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Makeup Level 3 VTCT Diploma at Redbridge College

Course description

Is it your ambition to work on film sets and in TV studios applying makeup to the stars? If you have an artistic flair and would like to work within the fashion, photographic, theatre, TV or cosmetic industries then this is the course for you. On this intensive one-year course you’ll develop the essential skills required for a career in specialist makeup.

Course content

Units you will study include:

  • Media makeup (special effects)
  • Camouflage makeup
  • Fashion and photographic makeup
  • Apply prosthetic makeup
  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
  • Style and fit postiche (facial hair and hairpeices)
  • Apply airbrush makeup to the face
  • Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety in the salon
  • Body painting
  • How to fit and look after wigs

Functional Skills: 16-18: You will also study English and maths to support your main course. 19+: You may study one of the functional skills if appropriate.

Entry requirements

You must be aged 16-18 years-old and have five GCSEs (including maths and/or English) at Grade C or above. You should also have good interpersonal skills, take pride in your appearance and be able to manage your time effectively as home study will be required. A portfolio of evidence demonstrating your artistic abilites will also be required.


You'll be taught by our highly skilled team of Beauty Therapy staff in specialist classrooms at our Ilford Skills Academy, as well as the college's brand new Urban Oasis salons (at The Exchange Ilford). Assessment takes place through written assignments, tests, verbal questioning and practical salon work. You will need to provide your own clients to act as models.

Future opportunities

On successful completion you will be qualified to work as a makeup artist in industries like television, theatre, salons and cosmetic companies. Many makeup artists are self-employed and have the opportunity to apply their skills to other events like weddings. You could also progress to university to further advance your skills by studying a degree, or continue studying at Redbridge College.
