Product Design A Level at Sydenham School - Sydenham and Forest Hill Sixth Form

Course description

This course will give you the opportunity to develop your design and manufacturing skills. We work closely with industry and universities and you can expect to take part in a number of trips and gain from the experience of industry experts, coming into school to give talks and advice.

 

Course content

Year 12 and Year 13

From September 2017 we will be following the new AQA specification for A-Level Product Design.

This is a two-year course with the final assessment taking place at the end of the second year.

It is possible to do only one year of Product Design which will only lead to an AS qualification in this subject but for anyone seeking to pursue a design-based career in the creative industries it is expected that they will be following this two-year course.

Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE D&T

Minimum point score of 38 including Maths and English at grade 4 at GCSE. This is equivalent to 4B and 4C grades overall at GCSE. Students will also need to achieve the subject specific criteria below:

  • G 1.00
  • F 1.50
  • E 2.00
  • D 3.00
  • C 4.00
  • B 5.50
  • A 7.00
  • A* 8.50

Assessment

Students are assessed on a design and make project (50% overall) and two written exams (50% overall).

Future opportunities

Some students progress to foundation courses in a range of Product Design/Art and Design courses. Others progress directly onto degree courses leading to careers including engineering, architecture, product design and surveying.
