Art and Design: Fine Art AS level at Cannock Chase High School

Course description

For students to extend their creative understanding through practical exploration of materials, research and development of personal style. We offer a range of processes to students and enable the personal development of preferred skill types. Context within Fine Art is a significant element of knowledge. It refers to how ideas, feelings and meanings connect to images and artefacts at a personal level and how they are socially constructed over time through genre, style and traditions.  

Course content


•      Unit 1 (Portfolio Unit – 60% of AS grade): Students submit one or more projects aimed at developing technical skills, and knowledge of the work of others. Coursework is launched with the chosen topic of ‘Human forms’, incorporating options in portraiture, figure drawing, cultural development and the human façade. 

•      Unit 2 (Externally set assignment – 40% of AS grade): Students select one starting point to develop following the four assessment objectives. Examination papers are released to students during the first school week in February.  

Entry requirements

GCSE Art (B+) but more importantly a genuine interest in the Creative subjects and willingness to improve is essential. GCSE English (C+) 

Future opportunities

It is considered valuable to a wide range of careers ranging from Architecture through to Web Design.

Animation, Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion, Architecture, Design, Painting/ Illustration, Fine Art, Art Historian, Jewellery Design, Video Game Design, Cartooning and Textile Artist are a range of other career opportunities available.
