Dance AS Level at Parkside School

Course description

This fast paced, exciting contemporary dance course will help to build your technical skills in dance and will provide you with a solid understanding and appreciation of thisinteresting subject. Weekly technique classes work on your strength, flexibility, co-ordination and stamina andchoreography classes provide you with an opportunity toexplore your own creative ideas.

Course content

In addition to the practical elements of the course you will study anatomy and physiology, notation and dance analysis. The programme combines the academic and practical elements of dance in a logical and interesting way, which will give you an extremely thorough understanding of the subject.

Entry requirements

There is a need to be prepared to put in extra time for rehearsal. Contrary to what many people think, there is a large workload for A level Dance so you need to be organised and very dedicated.

In order to succeed in this subject, you will need to be self motivated, committed and be open to improving your Dance skills in both written and practical work.

 

 

Assessment

Unit 1- Understanding Dance -40% (20%)

1 hour 30 mins examination

Two sections: A - structured questions

B - two essay questions

Unit 2 - Choreography and performance - 60% (30%)

Two sections: A - solo choreography and performance

B - performance in a duo/trio

 

Future opportunities

The specifications promoteprogression in depth and complexity through AS and A2 examinations and provide a suitable foundation for study in higher education and for employment.

 

Further information

The A level dance course is highly regarded and respected by universities and vocational dance schools.

Candidates are expected to acquire experience of choreography and performance and to engage in critical thinking about dance.
