Health and Social Care AS/A level at Heaton Manor School
The AS/A Level course offers students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding of health, early years care and education, and issues affecting the health and social care sector.
The course has been designed so that it can be undertaken by candidates entering this vocational area for the first time. Progression through Advanced Level will provide a suitable basis for further study in related subjects in higher education as well as a valuable preparation for careers in any area of health and social care. It can be taken as a single or double award.
This course is suitable for students who want a broad-based vocational qualification. You need to be self-motivated, able to work independently and meet deadlines.
The students will develop skills to enable them to make an effective contribution to the care sector.
In order to understand the nature of Health and Social Care, students’ learning is applied to a range of work-related contexts. This is achieved through a variety of approaches, including work experience, links with local employers, case studies, and research.
The school has links with local organisations including primary schools, nurseries, Sure Start, the National Health Service, Percy Hedley Foundation, Social Services and The British Heart Foundation.
The student will be assessed using a combination of portfolio and exam units.
It would be an advantage but it is not essential to have studied Health and Social Care at GCSE or BTEC.
The student should have obtained 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. Students must have achieved a C grade or above in GCSE English and Mathematics.
This qualification has been designed to allow for flexible progression routes, moving on to higher education or further training and/or employment. A wide range of opportunities are available, for example vocational degree courses, apprenticeships, teaching and higher studies in Health and Social Care and a wide range of other subjects.
