Music AS/A2 Level at St Mary's Catholic High School

Course description

Music is an excellent A level choice as it develops and demonstrates a wide range of skills including powers of analysis, creativity, aural perception, performance skills, critical thinking and verbal and written expression. Being a musician will open up many doors and A Level Music will equip you with the generic skills required for any university course.

Course content

Performing (40% AS) - Students will perform a Recital lasting 8 minutes to a visiting examiner. They will also perform a viva voce and an extended performance of 4 minutes.

Composition and Compositional Techniques (30% AS) -Students will complete harmony exercises and complete and 3 minute composition for between 4 and 10 instruments.

Musical Understanding (30% AS) - Students will take an aural exam and study 6 set works.

Performing (40% A2) - Students will perform a Recital lasting 15 minutes to a visiting examiner. They will again perform a viva voce.

Composition and Compositional Techniques (30% A2) - Students will complete a portfolio of Bach Chorale exercises and write a vocal composition lasting up to 4 minutes.

Musical Understanding (30% A2) - Again pupils will undertake an aural exam and will study Music History on a prescribed topic.

Entry requirements

Students will need grade B or above at GCSE and Grade 5 on any instrument or voice. Grade 5 Theory is compulsory and those students who do not have it must attend theory classes in school until it is obtained. Attendance at upper school choir and other relevant ensembles is also required.
