English Literature A level at Carlton Academy

Course description

You will develop your skills of analysis, inference and deduction and will critically analyse a wider and more diverse range of texts than you have at GCSE. You will build on your GCSE study of English, reading to a deeper level and developing your analytical skills further.

Studying English Literature helps to sharpen your analytical skills. If you can take a text and find the themes plus connect it with other texts, theories and historical events, you are showing that you can handle complex ideas, search for patterns and interpret information in a wider context. You will also develop your planning and research skills as well as gain knowledge of history, culture, philosophy and even human behaviour.

Course content

You will study a range of texts, including a Shakespeare play, an AQA Anthology of Love Poetry through the Ages (Pre-1900 or Post 1900) and two prose texts.

Future opportunities

Careers to consider: School teacher, Journalism and writing, Publishing, TV, Radio, Film, Drama and Music.
