Photography BTEC Extended UAL Diploma Level 3 at Weston College

Course description

If photography is your thing, you could do no better than starting your career with this study programme. You’ll learn from skilled photographers in our three fantastic darkrooms, studios and our digital facilities. You’ll also get to work with real clients giving you real insight to being a successful photographer.

This new study programme covers state-of-the-art digital technology as well as traditional silver-based practice. You will learn how to become a professional photographer. You will also have the chance to enter competitions and exhibit your work in an end of year show.

You’ll look at photography media, techniques and technology, darkroom practice, studio techniques, location photography, experimental imagery, image manipulation applications.

Maths and English is a fundamental element of this study programme. Skills in Maths and English will be embedded into your academic/vocational learning. If you do not have a grade C in Maths and/or English you will attend a discrete GCSE or Functional Skills class as part of your weekly timetable.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above or a Level 2 qualification.


External moderators and our tutors will assess your practical projects in studios and workshops and written assignments throughout the study programme.

Future opportunities

Progress to:

  • A Foundation Degree (FdA) in Photography in Practice or Graphic Design and then the relevant BA Honours top-up. These are all at Weston College in partnership with Bath Spa University and the University of the West of England.
  • A wide range of university degrees in photography, media or photographic illustration.
Job/career opportunities:

Press photographer, freelance photographer, media or fine art photographer.
