Horse Care Level 2 Diploma at Bicton College

Course description

This course provides a sound basic training in the care and management of horses. It is especially useful for the education and  training of people who care for horses who are hoping to be employed within the equine industry.

Course content

Attendance of yard duties at the Equestrian Centre will be expected in order to care for the horses. You will carry out duties starting at 8.30am for 2 days each week; in addition you will carry out work experience on one other day each week (Monday).

Attendance of 10 weekend days each year will be expected in order to gain a good insight into the running of the commercial activities, events and yard management. There will also be plenty of opportunities to compete in the equine events held here either on your own horse or one of the suitable College horses.

  • Work experience
  • Principles of feeding and watering horses
  • Routine stable duties
  • Horse handling
  • Horse grooming, trimming and plaiting
  • Animal health
  • Exercising horses (riding and lungeing)


Functional Skills
You will also work towards nationally recognised functional skills qualifications in English, Maths and ICT.

Entry requirements

It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working at Level 1. You will also need to have achieved 4 GCSEs at grades A–D, including English Language, Maths and Science or equivalent. All potential students may be required to attend work experience prior to starting the course. Acceptance will be based on satisfactory references.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion, this qualification will equate to 4 GCSEs at grade C and may allow progression to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management or the Advanced Apprenticeship in Horse Care and Management. Successful students might alternatively seek employment in a wide range of related businesses such as riding schools or competition yards, as a Groom or Assistant to a Yard Manager.
