Design and Technology:Textile Design (Fashion) A level at Wilmslow High School

Course description

This course will provide you with an interesting and challenging opportunity to further develop your designing skills and to fulfill your creative aspirations. You will be encouraged to adopt a broad view of design, in order to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing, whilst remaining innovative and working towards producing high quality products.

The textile course encompasses a variety of specialist areas ranging from fashion and interiors to industrial uses of textiles and from creative and individual work to aspects of manufacturing, industrial and commercial practice. The course will provide you with a detailed insight into the work of a designer and alternative aspects of the industry such as the marketing and advertising of fashion and textile products.

Course content

Most of the subject content is covered through project work reinforced by theory and work shop style exploration. For example the initial project delves into the past and the history of corsetry. The students will then research into how corsetry has evolved and reinvented itself into a high street garment for both day and evening wear. The subject content consists of the following specialisms:

Entry requirements

A grade C at GCSE in a Design and Technology or art based subject is required and a B grade is recommended, as is an interest in design.  It is also essential for students following this course to be highly motivated and self disciplined, since much of the work will require independent research and planning.
