Chemistry - AS at The Crest Academies

Course description

Students are introduced to the ideas of chemistry and their application to a variety of contexts, both everyday and more specialized. Their understanding of how science works in Chemistry is deepened. This course will be taught in 6 lessons per week. Some of the time will be set aside for practical work. Practical skills will be developed and assessed in these lessons. Homework will be set on a weekly basis and is an essential part of the course. Mock exams will take place every half term. Students will sit unit F321 in January, 2013 and F322 in the summer of 2013.

Entry requirements

A grade B at GCSE level in Chemistry or BB in Additional and Core Science is essential. Ideally, a B grade or higher will equip the student with the necessary background required for A-Level. Students need reasonably good mathematical skills including graphical skills and algebra. It is important to note that written communication will be assessed in student’s written work.

Practical Skills in Chemistry

Internal assessment

20% of the AS course

 

Students will be given an opportunity to sit one  of three set tasks from each of three set areas, Qualitative, Quantitative and Evaluative. Each task will be  carried out under the supervision of the class teacher, under controlled conditions. The results from each set will sent to the

OCR moderator at Easter time.                          

 

 

Future opportunities

The course is an excellent foundation for further study of chemistry, medicine and related subjects such as pharmacy or other sciences. Chemistry provides the academic rigor that shows intelligence, manipulative and problem solving skills that are needed in the work-place and is advantageous for Law, Economics and Accounting applications.
