Electronic or Electrical Engineering Level 3 at Northampton College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering will allow you to enter the world of work or University. Many engineers who gain this qualification go on to university to complete a BEng in Engineering. All units are assessed and graded individually and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded on completion of the full 18 units.During the first year you will study 9 units. In the second year you will complete a further 9 units. The pattern of attendance can involve students attending for the 4 days each week depending on the timetabled delivery of units for 2 years.Students who show an interest in progressing to University may be given the option to attend an additional unit, Further Engineering Mathematics, to help support their application. Please note this could be on a different day to normal attendance.A Level 3 National Extended Diploma is equivalent in size to three A Levels. This qualification is recognised by industry as providing a good foundation as it includes elements of Electrical and Electronics skills as well as some Mechanical Engineering disciplines. This course is ideal if you have an interest in the technical aspects of Engineering and wish to gain a Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.The Level 3 National Extended Diploma consists of 5 core units plus 13 optional units that provide for a combined total of 18 units. The hours for the delivery of these units are split equally over the 2 years. The 5 core units include:- Health & Safety in the Engineering Workplace- Communications for Engineering Technicians- Engineering Project(Double Unit)- Mathematics for Engineering Technicians- Electrical and Electronic PrinciplesYou will also study 13 specialist Engineering units from a wide range of related subject areas, such as:- Electronic Devices and Circuits- Analogue Electronic Circuits- Electronic Measurement and Testing- Electronic Printed Circuit Board Design and Manufacture- Computer Aided Design in Engineering- Electrical Machines- Three Phase Electrical Systems- Programmable Logic Controllers- Further Mathematics for Engineering TechniciansTo help with theory content, extra lessons in the form of GCSE English and Mathematics may be available to give you further support.Should you wish to know about the course and the units please visit the awarding body and look at the specification using the link below:(

Course content

This course is ideal if you have an interest in the technical aspects of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and wish to gain a Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Entry requirements

GCSEs at Grade A* - B in Mathematics and English Language with at least two more GCSEs at Grade A* - C preferably including Science, or a related BTEC Level 2 Engineering qualification at Merit Grade plus GCSE Mathematics at Grade A* - B and English Language at Grade A* - C or above.


Assessment is via a mixture of internally graded exams/assessments.Unit grades ranging from Pass, Merit and Distinction are achievable resulting in an overall grade for the qualification.

Future opportunities

If you successfully complete this course you may choose to:- Seek employment- Follow an Advanced Apprenticeship- Enter university to do a Foundation Degree, HNC/HND or other Professional Development Programme.

Further information

Students aged 19-23 at the start of the course will pay an exam registration fee of approximately £185 payable at enrolment.There may be opportunities to take part in trips and visits as part of your course. The approximate cost for this is £40, payable at enrolment.Students will also be required to purchase overalls and safety boots for the workshop activities and these can cost approximately £50.
