Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-Up Level 3 Diploma at Exeter College

Course description

If you want to work independently in the field of media make-up, this course is the ideal preparation. It builds on skills acquired during your Level 2 studies.

You will participate in a faculty show and media production events to gain much evidence towards this qualification. There are practical and theoretical classes which will help you develop a portfolio of evidence for verification. There is some case study/project work. Practical skills are developed on fellow students - once a level of competence is reached clients are to be used for assessment. You will participate in outside events supporting the drama and dance productions with media make up. Balance of the course is 40% theory/60% practical.

Course content

You will cover:

  • Working with colleagues within the beauty related industries
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
  • Creative hairdressing design skills
  • Design and apply face and body art
  • Fashion and photographic make up
  • Apply airbrush make up to the face
  • Media Makeup
  • Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
  • Provide self tanning
  • Apply individual permanent lashes
  • Camouflage make-up

Entry requirements

You must have successfully completed a Level 2 course in Hair and Media Make-Up or Level 2 Hairdressing (plus GCSE Art Grade C) or Level 2 Beauty Therapy OR have achieved 5 GCSE’s Grade A-C to include English Language and Art at a Grade C or above.

Assessment

You will be assessed practically, theoretically and orally in all areas. Testimonials may be required as evidence in some areas. Complete portfolios are verified and should include assessment books, case studies, projects, and theoretical papers. Some units have external on line test papers.

Financial information

You need a personal theatrical make up kit and uniform. You are responsible for providing your own working resources and sundries.

Future opportunities

You will be able to work independently in the field of media make up. The majority of work in the world of film, video, drama and dance is freelance.
