English Language AS/A2 at Torpoint Community College

Course description

In English Language you will explore how different types of texts have different features. You will look at the features of spoken language, written language and also blended modes like text and email. You will learn about some of the grammatical tools we can use to analyse language in detail and you will look at a wide variety of texts. As part of the course you will explore some of the wide ranging theories about how we learn to read, write and talk.

In coursework you will be able to choose your own texts and analyse them in detail. Anything goes and you can choose texts which you really love, anything from songs, to poems, to the scripts of a favourite film or your favourite magazines. You then have a chance to put your own creative skills into practice by writing your own piece in any style you like.

English Language works well with any combination of subjects and is accepted by all Universities. Many science students choose Language as their fourth subject to show they have diversity. Lots of students study Language alongside Literature and Media. It also works well with any combination of Humanities subjects. Either way, studying English Language shows employers and higher education that you have excellent communication skills
