Digital Media and Video Game Design (BTEC First) at Outwood Academy Hemsworth

Course description

Duration: 1 or 2 Years

A BTEC First is a 1 year applied course that can be studied alongside a range of traditional A Level programmes or a BTEC National programme over 1 year. Alternatively it can be studied as a ’stand-alone’ qualification over 2 years. It is equivalent to 1 GCSE and is a 120 hour course. You will study the four following units: Digital Media Sectors and Audiences Planning and Pitching a Digital Media Product, Digital Games Production, Website Production.

In this course you will be exploring the digital media industry and the different sectors under it (digital moving image, digital audio, digital publishing, website production and digital games production), with a specialism towards video game production and design. You will be planning and presenting ideas for digital media, researching different types of audiences, investigating the technical requirements for website production. You will write a document that explains all aspects of the game and what the player does, finally creating pre-visuals and a portion of a video game following your design. .

At least 1 GCSE Grade C (new Grade 4+)

Assessment

How will I be assessed?

A BTEC First is part coursework and part written exam. One of the units is taken as a written exam, assessed externally, the other units are internally assessed coursework. Your work will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Future opportunities

Progression

After this course you will be in a position to progress to level 3 vocational qualifications such as BTEC National Digital Media and Video Game Design. The applied nature of the course will give you relevant skills for working in the creative digital media industry.
