Sport:Health, Fitness & Exercise Level 2 at Suffolk New College

Course description

This study programme offers an extensive study of fitness and training. On completion of the programme you will be fully qualified to work as a gym instructor and be able to teach circuit training and spinning (on bikes) sessions. You will have the opportunity to utilise the College’s fantastic facilities, as well as local health clubs as part of your journey. Educational trips include visiting a fitness convention, EXPO and local gymnastic ll students who have not achieved a grade C or grade 4, or above in GCSE English or Maths or both will need to study an English or/and Maths qualification alongside their chosen main qualification.

Course content

Units include Anatomy and Physiology, Health and Safety, Customer Service, Supporting Clients, Nutrition, Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health, Understanding the Sector, and Developing Self as part of the theory. Practical units are based around studying instructing Gym Based Exercise and delivering Circuit Training and/or Spin classes (on bikes). You should expect to be in College for a minimum of three full days a week, while also taking part in relevant work experience in a Sport setting. The programme is assessed using a variety of methods including assignments, practical performance, observations, presentations, and discussions. In addition, there are two one hour exams and three practical assessments, which must be successfully passed to achieve this qualification.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or grade 3, including English Language or successful completion of BTEC Level 1 Sport & Public Services and Level 1 Functional skills in English.

Financial information

Tuition Costs 

No tuition fees are payable for students aged 16 – 18 on 31 August 2017. For all students aged 19+ please visit our website www.suffolk.ac.uk. Details regarding fee remission and Advanced Learning Loans can also be found at the above website.

Additional Costs

Students benefit from trips that support educational attainment in year and these cost £30, which is payable at enrolment. In addition, students will need to pay £50 for gym membership.

Future opportunities

It is expected this will provide students with entry into the fitness industry with work as a gym or circuit instructor; with the additional options of progressing onto our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport to further their education and training.
