Light Vehicles Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship at Buxton & Leek College

Course description

As an apprentice, you become an employee at a company, earn money and work alongside experienced people to gain the skills you need in your chosen industry. As part of this, you also train and work towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Your employer will train you in the workplace, offering you a structured programme that takes you through the skills the job requires. You will gain practical experience and training whilst working towards industry recognised qualifications, have a contract of employment, with holiday entitlement.

An Apprenticeship is a group of qualifications under a framework which combine competency, technical and functional skills elements. All Apprenticeships include the following elements:

Competency Element – Enables you to demonstrate your workplace abilities and prove that you can do specific job-related tasks

Knowledge Element – Gives you broader understanding about the industry in which you work

Transferable Skills – Including Literacy, Numeracy and ICT, these qualifications cover more general work-related skills e.g. communication, problem-solving, team working and using new technologies

Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) – You will learn about your rights and responsibilities in the workplace, covering things such as health and safety, working hours and contract of employment

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) – Part of the Apprenticeship, you will develop a series of underpinning skills that employers are looking for
