Course description

What is Resistant Materials?

This course seeks to develop your knowledge, understanding, skills and application for designing products. Resistant Materialsencompasses a wide range of design disciplines but is firmly rooted in the skills required to design and make high – qualityproducts that are commercially viable and enhance our day to day lives. In order to develop a final design you will have theopportunity to use a wide range of materials and manufacturing process. Including traditional methods of manufacture such asjoinery, welding, lamination and fabrication to modern methods including computer aided manufacture with our milling andlaser cutting machines. Students design and make products in consultation with a suitable client who influences designdecisions. This provides the opportunity to design and make a product related to your interests and use materials that you enjoyworking with.

To provide you with an exciting and practical course that enables you to produce high quality, marketable products. Throughoutthe design and making process you will learn designing, practical skills, marketing and problem solving skills utilising knowledgefrom other subjects and encouraging you to work outside the classroom to get a feel for real life situations and contexts.

Entry requirements

To study at Hellesdon High School Sixth Form you will need: SIX GCSEs A* - C Grades will enable you to study FOUR A/S Level courses.

We would advise that a Grade B at GCSE would be a good indicator of potential for A Level but we will discuss this with you. Equally we can discuss options for individuals who may fall short of the six higher grade entry requirements.

When applying for courses you should look to study subjects that:

  • a) You have a strong interest in (and enjoyment of)
  • b) You feel you are successful at
  • c) Your Yr11 teachers have highlighted you are good at.

It may also be useful to investigate university/employment websites if you have a particular interest in following a subject forward after Sixth Form.

Subject Specific

It is desirable that the applicant has at least a grade B in either GCSE Resistant Materials, Graphic Products or a similar designbased course such as Art and Design. If you have a passion for Design and Technology and did not study these courses at GCSElevel you will be considered after a discussion with the Design & Technology staff. This course compliments Maths, Science andBusiness studies.

Future opportunities

You will learn problem solving and practical skills beneficial to any job or career you may decide to follow. More specific pathways can include: Industrial Product Design/Engineering/Civil engineering /3 Dimensional Design/Interior Design/Graphic Design / Architecture/ Advertising / Design and Marketing/Product development/ Theatre set design / Teaching and Lecturing.
