Maths AS A2 at The Duston School

Course content

The modular course, whilst the content will have been reduced, will consist of a combination of Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.

  • Pure Mathematics looks at algebraic topics, Co-ordinate Geometry and calculus, for example, and underpins the work covered in the Applied modules.
  • Mechanics includes Kinematics, Newton`s Law of Motion and a study of Forces.
  • Statistics explores the Probability distributions, together will topics such as Correlation, Expectation and Variance.

AS Level

Students can take AS Level at the end of Year 12. The course consists of 2 Pure Mathematics modules (C1 and C2) and either a Statistics module (S1) or a Mechanics module (M1).

A Level

In Year 13 students take another 3 modules. These will comprise of another 2 Pure Mathematics modules (C3 and C4) and whichever of Statistics and Mechanics was not taken in Year 12.

Expectations

  • Students are provided with the appropriate text books.
  • They are expected to work consistently hard.
  • You should spend at least as much time doing Maths out of lessons as in the lessons.
  • You are encouraged to seek help and advice from the Maths staff as often as you require rather than just in Maths lessons.
  • Twilight sessions and holiday classes (voluntary but encouraged) have been run in the past.

Entry requirements

For entry to Mathematics at `A` Level, students would be expected to have achieved at least a grade C at GCSE, but ideally ought to have a grade B, preferably at Higher Tier.

All students would, in addition, be expect to have successfully completed a short bridging course held in June and July after the GCSEs.

Assessment

Exams last for one hour 30 minutes

Year 12

January C1 and S1 / June C2

Year 13

January M1 / June C3 and C4

Future opportunities

Qualifications in Mathematics and Further Mathematics can lead to a variety of career opportunities.

`A` Level Mathematics is essential for entry into degree courses in Engineering and Physics, and desirable for entry into many University Science courses.

Mathematics and Statistics play an increasingly important role in Biology, Geography, Psychology and Sociology. A Mathematical qualification for careers such as accountancy, insurance, banking and finance, business administration and medicine is highly desirable. Increasingly courses involving Mathematics and aspects of industry, such as finance, are being developed at degree level. When qualified, mathematicians tend to have very good career prospects.
