Art and Design UAL Level 3 Diploma at Carlisle College
The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design is aimed at 16-18 year old students who want to specialise in art and design rather than stay at school and take the multiple AS level pathway. It is the first year of a course for committed and dedicated students mostly seeking to progress to the Foundation course without doing two years of A-Level at school. The type of student who applies here often feels that school is not the place for them and they wish to experience a fast paced and challenging art and design course on a full time study basis rather than five hours a week in an A level. We will be looking for independent minded students who enjoy creative challenge and are keen and motivated to draw experiment and develop their skills. You must be prepared to make your own decisions about your artwork and then be able to talk about your reasons and wishes in your work.
Year 1 is made up of 9 modules which you must pass in order to progress. You will start with module 1 and progress to module 9. All modules must be successfully completed to gain your qualification. Unit 1 to 7 and Unit 9 are graded as Pass or Refer only and you must pass these to be allowed to progress to Unit 8 and 9. Unit 8 is graded at Refer / Pass / Merit / Distinction or Distinction * and this sets your grade for the year.
You need a minimum of:
- 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including English language and Maths
- Level 2 Vocational Qualification at Merit or Distinction and Level 2 qualifications in Maths and English
- Scottish equivalent.
Work is assessed throughout the course via a range of vocationally relevant projects.
At the end of year1, you will be awarded a Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design and can then apply to enter year 2 which is the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design. To Progress to the Extended Diploma you need to achieve a merit.
Pathways from this course are:
- Extended Diploma in Art and Design
- Foundation in Art and Design
- B.A.Hons in all Art and Design related subjects.
- Foundation Degree in all Art and Design related subjects.
- Work in an Art or Design studio (subject to availability) or
- Self employment in the Arts.
You will need to provide your own materials and equipment for the majority of the course and there will be workshop costs for materials that you may wish to use during your study. There are opportunities to take part in a number of visits in both the UK and abroad to broaden your experience of the Art & Design world and to aid you with your future progression. All students have access to 'Student Services' which can advise you on a variety of issues including finance, learning support, travel and child care.
