Course description

Students of Government and Politics will develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes. They will gain an understanding of the structures of authority and power within the UK's political system and how these may differ from those of other political systems.

Course content

The aims of the Edexcel Advanced Subsidiary in Government and Politics are to encourage students to: „

  • develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes 
  • acquire knowledge and understanding of the structures of authority and power within the political system of the United Kingdom, and how these may differ from those of other political systems 
  • acquire knowledge and informed understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the individual and encourage an interest in, and engagement with, contemporary politics.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 6 GCSE grades at A*-C including English and Mathematics with a grade B or above in the subjects to be studied.

Assessment

AS Unit 1: People and Politics

  • Externally assessed
  • Written examination
  • 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Students will be required to answer two structured questions from a choice of four.
  • Each question will have a mark tariff of 5, 10 and 25 marks.
  • 50%

AS Unit 2: Governing the UK

  • Externally assessed
  • Written examination
  • 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Students will be required to answer one stimulus-based question from a choice of two.
  • These questions will be structured with a mark tariff of 5, 10 and 25 marks.
  • Students will then be required to answer one extended question from a choice of two (40 marks).
  • 50%

    • Welcome to the Sixth Form

      We are happy to welcome you to your first year of voluntary education. Our philosophy here is simple; it is student focused and individual. We believe that one size doesn't fit all and we work to ensure that every one achieves their targets, whether it be Oxbridge entrance or an apprenticeship. Every student has different skills and different aims and we are here to help you achieve them, whatever they may be.

      KS Sixth Form is designed to help you reach your potential in both your academic and social life. Most of all you can expect to be able to study in a pleasant and safe environment. We are lucky to have a brand new sixth form centre where there is both a canteen area with a coffee shop and also a quiet, supervised study area.

      The Sixth Form is integrated into the life of the whole school community and Sixth Formers are expected to act as role models towards younger students. Our aim is to produce well-balanced, responsible young adults fully prepared to take their place in Higher Education, the professions and the Jewish Community.
