Digital Media Design Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Bridgwater College

Course description

This course is for 16 – 19 year olds with a keen interest in design for games, web and motion graphics, and a desire to follow a career in interactive and digital media. This course will focus on the creative design aspects of digital media products and the related industries.

Course content

The course is structured to give all students a wide range of experiences that introduce basic digital skills and ideas. You will be involved in project-based work that will develop your creative and technical ability.

Year one subjects include:

  • Research and Communication techniques
  • Understanding the Digital Media industry
  • Designing Idents for television
  • Digital storytelling
  • Digital Graphics
  • Interactive Media Design
  • Web Design
  • Game Design

The second year will see you continuing project work with a more in-depth approach to analysis and the introduction of advanced technical skills. You will have the opportunity to study more specialist areas of Interactive and Digital Media, to work with an outside client, and to develop your own ideas in the form of a Final Major project.

Throughout year two, you will also be given support and advice when making Higher Education or Apprenticeship applications and you will be assisted in the preparation of a portfolio of your work for university or job interview.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs grades A* – C or an appropriate level 2 qualification and any examples of work that you think may strengthen your application for the course.

Assessement methods may include:

  • Practical projects
  • Assignments
  • Case studies
  • Presentations
  • Externally examined coursework tasks

You will need to compile a portfolio of evidence to present at the end of the course for assessment purposes.

Future opportunities

The digital media industry is a growing industry and so there are many opportunities upon completion of this course. You could study at Higher Education in games, animation, web design, interactive media or you could enter the industry as a Creative & Digital Media Apprentice or as an intern.
