Studying English Literature at A Level is a rewarding and fascinating journey for any student who loves reading and wants to broaden their understanding of a wide range of modern and classic literary texts. 

The Department prides itself on being able offer courses which develop the students’ analytical and critical skills that are invaluable for those who go on to study at university. We aim to encourage independence, develop inquisitive minds and foster a life-long love of Literature.

The A level success rate of the English Department and its students is excellent (last year 100%) in both subjects and many of our students go on to specialise in English at under-graduate level.

Component 1

Examined (40% of total A Level) 

  • Shakespeare
  • Drama and Poetry pre-1900

Component 2

Examined (40% of total A Level) 

  •  Close reading in a topic area such as: The Gothic; Women in Literature and The Immigrant Experience.
  • Comparative and contextual study from the same topic area.

Component 3

Non-Examined coursework (20% of total A Level)

  • Literature post-1900

What next…

Virtually all English students go on to take University courses in a wide range of different disciplines, from Law to Medicine and Business Management to Classical Studies. Success in the subject is seen to be an indicator of good critical and analytical skills.

The Department offer frequent opportunities to see dramatic productions at local theatres, attend lectures related to texts and modules and to develop the students’ own interest in the subject.

Finally…

English courses have been popular choices and the vast majority of AS students go on to take A2. The A level success rate of the Department is excellent. The skills that are developed in this area are much in demand in University departments and in most areas of employment.

    • Sixth Form courses at Old Swinford Hospital are delivered at our site located off Heath Lane in Old Swinford. The campus is located only a 5 minutes walk away from Stourbridge Junction train station and about 5-10 minutes walk from the centre of Stourbridge town.
