English Language and Literature A Level at The Hazeley Academy

Course description

The English Language and Literature course has two aims: to foster a love of poetry, prose and drama and to develop an acute understanding of how written and spoken forms of English are used. You will be engaging with a wide variety of exciting and stimulating written and spoken texts. In analysing this broad spectrum of English, you will learn about writers' choices of structure and language, and hone your ability to form independent opinions about what you read. You will extend your skills across a range of writing styles, including the imaginative and analytical, developing your own creative writing skills in the process.

This is a de-coupled qualification, students will have the opportunity to take their AS at the end of Year 12 and the A level at the end of Year 13.

Entry requirements

Students should have a minimum grade of a B in GCSE English or English Language.

Future opportunities

This course is suitably demanding and works well with most other subjects, leading you beyond GCSE level towards independence in the skills of analysing and evaluating. These skills are essential for most types of employment and courses in higher education. A high level qualification in English lends itself to a wide variety of careers, particularly the professions in the civil service, public relations, media and publishing and journalism.
