A Level Photography at Ashton Sixth Form College

Course description

On this course you will explore a range of areas including landscape, still life, portrait, documentary and experimental photography. You’ll research contemporary photographers and their work and explore your own creativity.

The course focuses mostly on digital and fine art experimental photography. Also a central part of it will be researching contemporary photographers and their work. After exploring a range of techniques, work will be based around developing your own photography skills and creative ideas.

Course content

Unit 1: Skills and techniques

Topic areas include: Composition and rules of photography. How to use a DSLR camera, professional studio, digital photography combined with fine art photography and other lens based media.

Unit 2: Personal work

After exploring techniques and range of themes, work will be based developing photographic skills in a personal direction, exploring your own creativity using our studio or location photography. We have a variety of photographic equipment to use in and out of lessons to support learning.

Entry requirements

Minimum 5 GCSE grades A*-C

Grade C — GCSE English

GCSE/BTEC Art or Photography not essential.

Future opportunities

Photography students progress onto a wide variety of degrees and careers. Last year 73% of students moved on to Higher Education and 13% secured employment or a place on an Apprenticeship.
