Mathematics and Further Mathematics are classed as two separate qualifications

Why Further Mathematics?

In the current climate, good Mathematicians are becoming increasingly rare and in demand. 

Further Mathematics is certainly a strong advantage to those considering a university degree in Mathematics, and a real asset to those who may not develop their Mathematics beyond sixth form, as it displays the potential to do so. 

If you enjoy Mathematics, there are a lot of exciting and challenging topics to be found within the course, which really starts to show how creative and powerful Mathematics can be.

 

Course content

Further Mathematics Modules

If you choose to study further mathematics, you will complete the following AS modules in Year 12.

Core 1, Core, 2, Core 3, Further Pure 1, Mechanics 1, Statistics 1.     

In Year 13 you will study 6 from:

Core 4, Further Pure 2, Further Pure 3, Statistics 2, Statistics 3, Mechanics 2, Mechanics 3, Decision 1.

The Core and Further Pure modules study the mathematical methods that are necessary to apply the mathematical models used in Mechanics and Statistics.   Students will be required to break down problems and plan solutions for themselves, which requires a significant amount of self-study.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to study Further Mathematics in Y12 are required to have a least an A* at GCSE. 

Choosing this option will take up two AS Level choices. All Further Mathematicians will study in the same class for the full eight hours a week.

 

Assessment

Each module is assessed by a 90 minute written paper. Each module is worth the same.  No coursework is involved.  Core 1 is a non-calculator paper.

 

Future opportunities

The applied areas of Mechanics and Statistics rely on the Core elements of the course, and relate to areas such as Engineering, Economic Planning, Finance and Operational Research. 

In all of these areas Mathematics is used to model a real-life  situation and arrive at the safest, most profitable solution.  However, the ability to think analytically is of course a tremendous asset in any career.
