Chemistry A level at Park View Community School

Course description

By understanding structure, properties and reactivity, chemists have learned how to take naturally occurring materials and transform them into materials that improve all of our lives. Chemists around the world are developing about half a million new materials each year. Chemistry is diverse – covering areas from the chemistry of living things, to what is out there in the solar systems, to the subatomic particles that are the basis of everything. Chemistry is awesome!

Entry requirements

GCSE sciences with at least grade B. An understanding of mathematics calculations is required for success in both AS and A level chemistry.

Also desirable: a logical, creative and imaginative mind. A love of practical work!

Future opportunities

A level chemistry is essential for many higher education courses:

  • chemistry,
  • colour chemistry,
  • medicine,
  • dentistry,
  • chemical engineering,
  • pharmacy,
  • biochemistry,
  • dietary sciences,
  • forensic science,
  • veterinary science

and is useful for those aiming to follow courses in one of the other sciences or related subjects.

It is also a highly respected qualification that high end academic institutes look favourably on in UCAS applications. A level chemistry can also lead to direct employment opportunities. Past students have gone on to work in financial services and the chemical industry.
