Biology A Level at Maricourt Catholic High School
Biology is a rapidly growing and exciting science. With the development of biotechnology, genetic engineering and DNA sequencing, new careers opportunities are opening all the time. Biology combines well with many subjects including Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Psychology PE and Health and Social Care. Best of all, Biology allows you to learn a lot of facts, apply them to different situations and continue to study an A Level course with a practical element which is highly regarded by Universities!
The AS specification has four distinct topics:
Topic 1: Biological molecules
The study of varying carbon based molecules including carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
Cells All life exists as cells, this topic looks at the diverse variety of cells and the processes which occur within them.
Topic 3: Organisms exchange substances with their environment
How digestive and gas exchange systems function within plants and animals.
Topic 4: Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
Genetic structure and its relationship to diversity and evolution.
The A2 specification has four distinct topics:
Topic 5 Energy transfers in and between organisms
An in-depth study of photosynthesis and respiration in the biological world.
Topic 6: Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments
The role of the nervous and endocrine systems in reacting to changes within the body and the environment around us.
Topic 7: Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
How variation occurs, and its links to genetics and natural selection.
Topic 8: Control of gene expression
How control of gene expression and knowledge of the human genome have be used to develop technologies to treat human diseases which are fundamental to modern medical science.
