Course description

AS - Course & Module Description

Coursework (40% of AS grade)

Write two pieces of original writing with commentaries.

Examples: A short story; an opinion piece; a fictional diary; a travel piece.

Exam (60% of AS grade)

One paper in the summer.

Answer two questions:

  • Group texts in terms of linguistic methods, audience, purpose and contextual factors
  • Analyse how gender, technology and power affect language

A2 - Course & Module Description

Coursework (20% of A-Level grade)

Write an investigation into an area of language study of your choice.

Example: How do Vogue and FHM use language to appeal to readers of a specific gender?

Write a media piece about the language issue in your investigation.

Example: Sexist Language in FHM—A Disgrace?

Exam (30% of A-Level grade)

Answer two questions:

  • How children acquire and develop language
  • How the English language has changed over time
