Food Technology A Level at The Broxbourne School

Course description

Year 12
Unit 1:
This covers the theory related to Food Technology. Topics include: in depth knowledge of food materials, nutrition, dietary
planning and health, food additives, food processing, hygiene and safety, social and environmental factors and food
manufacturing.
Unit 2:
Unit 2 consists of 2 coursework projects which relate to all aspects of the design process. Practical work plays a major part in
Unit 2 and can take the form of experiments, analysis and manufacturing.
Year 13
Unit 3:
Knowledge of Food Technology continues to be developed. Topics include: physical and chemical structure of nutrients,
preservation, legislation, use of micro-organism and enzymes in food processing.
Unit 4:
Like Unit 2 but again to a higher, more complex level, in both folder and practical work.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements to The Broxbourne School Sixth Form are based on both the average KS4 points achieved in the summer of year 11 and specific grades gained in subjects relevant to those that they wish to pursue in the Sixth Form. Students are expected to take four AS subjects and AS General Studies in Year 12 and should have demonstrated a consistently serious attitude to study.
To enter the Sixth Form to study 4 or 5 AS / A-level courses students should have achieved at least 5+ A* - C grades including English and Maths, must have demonstrated a consistently serious attitude to study and
• gained an average points score of 43 points or more and,
• achieved the entry grade B in the GCSE subject they wish to study at AS / A-level or in the case of subjects not taken at GCSE the entry grade in related subjects
• achieve at least an A in GCSE Maths to take AS level Maths
