Textiles AS/A2 at West Coventry 6th Form (Woodlands Academy, Tile Hill Wood School, Westwood Academy)
When people think of the word ‘innovation’ they link it to the world of design and this maybe the area you want your career to be in. A Level Textiles gives you the opportunity to develop your capacity to design and make products. To also appreciate the complex relations between designs, materials, manufacture and marketing. The subject will enable you to take a broad view of design and technology and to develop a wide range of skills, including working with others, thinking creatively and making quality products.
Textiles helps students develop a number of skills: • How to develop a brief with an inspiration theme • How to conduct effective research to enable you to create unique designs • How to create innovate designs and illustrate them in relation to you design criteria • How to make a product to a high standard showing accuracy • How to adapt your product so it can be made in the manufacturing industry • Enhance subject knowledge which develops a deeper understanding within textiles
You must have gained a Grade C or above in GCSE Textiles.
Year 12: Unit 1 Exam and Unit 2 Coursework – they both have a 50% split in total AS mark Year 13: Unit 3 Exam and Unit 4 Coursework – they both have a 25% split in total with the AS marks
Of course, being a Textiles or Fashion Designer is a natural outcome, but there are other job prospects. Interior Designers have the opportunity to create and design for a range of atmospheres from small coffee shops to famous museums. Topshop and other high end retail shops need Fashion Merchandises and Buyers to develop their companies further and this may be something you want to be a part of. You may want to open your own store to design and make your own products.
This is a creative subject, giving you the opportunity to show your ideas thought design in your coursework folder. The theory aspect of the coursework will enable you to gain knowledge of the textiles industry as well as properties of fabrics to. In both areas you will be guided via teacher led demonstrations/activities, discussions, visits to see current designers work, group work and independent research to achieve your full potential.
