Sport - Performance and Excellence (Football Development Academy in association with SCFC) BTEC Level 3 National Diploma at Congleton High School

Course description

This course is suitable for 16-19 year olds who may wish to enter employment or further education within the world of sport, specifically the sports coaching, elite sports programmes or high level performance development in sport. The course is designed to provide the opportunity to fine tune your football skills and will allow you to combine your studies with football training and represent Congleton College in the British Colleges League.

This course has been developed to provide a higher practical level of preparation for employment and / or to provide career development opportunities for those seeking employment in the elite/performance orientated sporting sector. You will also improve functional skills such as literacy, numeracy, using ICT, research, presentation and discussion skills.

The BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to two A levels.

Course content

You will study 10 Units:
- Unit 1 Anatomy and Physiology
- Unit 2 Fitness Training and Programming
- Unit 3 Professional Development in the Sports Industry
- Unit 5 Application of Fitness Testing
- Unit 6 Sport Psychology
- Unit 7 Practical Sports Performance
- Unit 8 Coaching for Performance
-Unit 26 Technical and Tactical Demands for Sport
- Unit 27 The Athletes Lifestyle
- Unit 28 Sports Performance Analysis

Entry requirements

Students wishing to complete the BTEC National Diploma should have achieved at least a grade B at GCSE level Physical Education or a minimum Merit on the BTEC Sport course in key stage 4. You will need practical capability, preferably showing a good level of football ability evident by playing for school, local side and/or regional side.

Assessment

You will be taught the practical & theoretical aspects of the course through discussion work, lectures, practical experiences and guest speakers. You will be expected to take on increasing responsibility for your own learning by developing presentations to your group, researching topics as well as using the Learning Resource Centre and Internet. An ability to organise your time well and adhere to deadlines is essential for this course.

Unit assessment is assessed through a variety of means such as written information, witness and observational statements and video/picture logs. This is graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Units 1 & 2 are externally assessed.

You may be able to take this course with one other vocational or academic course at Congleton High School Sixth Form or The Congleton College, or a work placement, subject to timetabling constraints.
