Course description

The aim of the course is to give students a wide-ranging understanding of the issues that face our planet in the 21st century.

As a unique discipline, geography combines the earth sciences with a humanitarian focus where students will hone their skills in interpreting data and maps, conducting an enquiry and synthesising text.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Course content

Unit 1:

Tectonic processes and hazards, landscape systems processes and change (coastal landscapes and change), water cycle and water insecurity, carbon cycle and energy security.

Unit 2:

Globalisation, shaping places (regenerating places), superpowers, global development and connections (migration, identity and sovereignty).

Unit 3:

Synoptic investigation based on a geographical issue. There are 3 synoptic links within Unit 1 and 2 which include players, attitudes and actions, futures and uncertainties.

Unit 4:

Geographical investigations includes the completion of an individual investigation which must include data collected in the field. The individual investigation must be based on a question or issue defined and developed by the student relating to any part of the specification content. 3000-4000 word count, 20% of A-Level.

 

 

Entry requirements

GCSE Geography grade B or above.

 

 

Assessment

· Unit 1:

2 hours 15 minutes written exam - 30% of A-Level.

· Unit 2:

2 hours 15 minutes written exam - 30% of A-Level.

· Unit 3:

2 hours 15 minutes written exam - 20% of A-Level.

· Unit 4:

Controlled assessment - 20% of A-Level.

The transferable skills gained through this course are highly prised and therefore useful for a multitude of degree courses and career opportunities including: Civil Service, Leisure and Tourism, Media, Environmental Management and Earth Sciences.
