Art and Design, AQA at Penistone Grammar Advanced Learning Centre

Course description

On this course you will be encouraged to explore your creativity and to develop a range of practical skills inspired by the investigation of the work of other artists and designers. You will experience a variety of media, techniques and processes in both 2 and 3 dimensions selected from the following areas: drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, digital photography and digital media.


Course content

Coursework projects allow for independent and personalised responses and will develop you as a creative individual fully equipped with the skills required for further study and for employment in a related field. This course provides an excellent foundation for any Art & Design career and you will also learn many skills that are transferable to other sectors.
The department has a proven track record of academic success, with all students who applied for further or higher education courses in Art and Design successfully securing places.

Entry requirements

To secure a place at our Post 16 Centre five passes or more GCSE passes at grade C or above and a minimum of a C grade in both English Language and Mathematics.  All students will also need a B Grade GCSE in any subject they are wanting to study at A Level.  If it is a new subject for example Sociology or Psychology students must have achieved a grade B in both Mathematics and English Language. 

You will be expected to have gained at least a grade B in Art at GCSE level. You must also demonstrate a clear commitment to the subject and be willing to apply the necessary time and effort required to meet the demands of the course. Good drawing skills would be an advantage.



AS Level :

Unit 1: Coursework Portfolio (25%)
Includes sketchbooks, developmental and final pieces of practical work.
Unit 2: Externally Set Assignment (25%)
Issued by AQA and conducted in 5 hours of supervised time.
A2 Level:
Unit 3: Personal Investigation (25%)
A practical project supported by a written piece of work of 3000 words.
Unit 4: Externally Set Assignment (25%)
Issued by AQA and conducted in 15 hours of supervised time.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare you for higher education in areas of art and design, photography, architecture or more general higher education courses.  There are a considerable number of career options open to A Level Art & Design students within the broad areas of fine art, fashion, textiles, graphics, three-dimensional design and architecture. A Level Art & Design is usually an entry requirement for degree courses in these fields and is normally required for a 1 year art foundation course.  The course will also encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
