Childcare - Level 3 CACHE Certificate/Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) at Wakefield College

Course description

Working with babies and young children can be a very rewarding career with a wide range of job roles available to qualified Early Years Educators. This course will give you the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge to support children’s learning and development. 

Successful completion of the Certificate in the first year and demonstration of the qualities required to effectively work with babies and young children will allow you to progress onto the second year Diploma course. 

The second year of study will enable you to gain a greater understanding of children’s holistic development as well as developing your skills as a practitioner. The successful completion of the Diploma qualification will give you Level 3 qualified practitioner status, (Early Years Educator) enabling you to work with babies and children in day care and health care settings, nurseries and foundation stage units within primary schools. Both the first year certificate course and the second year Diploma course will also allow you to achieve UCAS points for entry to university.

Development from conception to age 7 years

Emergent literacy
International perspectives
Professional practice

Your Course Structure

Classroom: 40%; Practical: 40% Independent Study/Research: 20%

How you will learn

Through a wide range of classroom and workshop-based activities, lectures, student presentations, group work, portfolio development and controlled assessment tasks.
 

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4) including both English and Maths

Assessment

Student work will be assessed through externally assessed assignments, controlled classroom based assessments, portfolio of evidence, and longitudinal studies involving the study of two children from two different age ranges in a real work environment.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residential etc. which are payable by all students.

Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Related additional costs include: two placement polo shirts, a CACHE student textbook, stationary (arch lever files) and the cost of any day/residential trips students choose to take part in.

 

Future opportunities

Further study

After successful completion of the course students can progress on to a Degree or Foundation Degree course in a related subject such as primary education, qualified teacher status, (early years or primary school teaching) play worker or family services related degrees.

Wakefield College offers a Foundation Degree in Young Children’s Learning and Development which can then be topped up to a BA in Early Years.

Career opportunities

The Early Years Educator Diploma qualification gives you a licence to practise unsupervised or in a supervisory capacity in a range of settings including nurseries, schools, day nurseries, family centres, private families and hospitals.

Potential job roles include: Early Years Educator within education or care, children's nanny, child minder, children's representative abroad or on cruise ships.

Please note if you are considering a career in primary teaching, most universities require GCSE at grade B or above in Maths and English, plus Science at grade C or above.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.


      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
