AS/A2 Applied Science at Sandringham School

Course description

Course Aims

Applied Science is ideal for students who wish to develop their practical and investigative skills further and to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics at A Level.

The course is divided into 6 modules, only 2 are examined, the other 4 are coursework based.

In AS Applied Science you will visit 5 scientific organisations, studying one in detail. You will learn how to carry out basic chemical analytical techniques and study power generation and energy efficiency. Finally you will learn about the circulatory and respiratory systems, and how to monitor them to detect abnormalities and diseases.

Course Structure

AS – 2 coursework units/ 1 examined unit:
Module 1 – Science at work – coursework unit
Module 2 – Analysis at work – coursework unit
Module 3 – Monitoring the activity of the Human body – examined unit

In A2 Applied Science you will design and carry out an investigation of your choice, learning how to present, analyse and evaluate your results. You will also learn a variety of practical techniques allowing you to sample, test and process. Finally you will develop an understanding of genetic engineering, learning about its uses in modern medicine and agriculture. You will also carry out a biotechnology investigation.

A2 – 2 coursework units/ 1 examined unit:
Module 1 – Investigating the scientist’s work – coursework unit
Module 2 – The mind and brain – coursework unit
Module 3 – Investigating waves – examined unit



Entry requirements

Two grade Cs at GCSE Science (higher), plus English and Maths. You must be ready to apply yourself for this course as there will be a demand for you to complete a large amount of coursework for your portfolio.
